Domestic Waste Water Treatment – Considering A Septic Tank For Waste Water Treatment?

Domestic waste water treatment options are varied, and one solution you may be considering is a septic tank. In rural areas, septic tanks were considered the traditional method for dealing with sewage. However, this is no longer the case, as they aren’t actually allowed in over 60 per cent of UK sites.

As per the Environment Agency PPG4 rules, septic tanks are only allowed for up to a maximum population of 15 people. Not only this, but this form of waste water treatment is not permitted in Zone 1 of the Groundwater Source Protection Zones whatsoever, and even existing ones need to be decommissioned. So, before you choose a septic tank for sewage disposal, there are three steps you need to take. Firstly, you need to find out if you are located in a Groundwater Source Protection Zone. The next thing you need to do is build a trial site assessment hole. This hole needs to be dug in order to determine the maximum height for the winter water table. You won’t be allowed a septic tank system if the water table ever gets within 2.1 metres of ground level. Last but not least, a percolation test is a must. This test will determine if the ground can efficiently absorb the liquid and eradicate the pollutants. System failure is a real probability if the ground cannot accept liquids properly, as the soakaway will end up blocked very quickly. This is why clay ground is not suitable for a septic tank.
